ARTIST STATEMENT

Growing up in Zwevezele, a small Flemish village, I was raised by a family running a printing company and art gallery. In 2013 I graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts (KASK) in Ghent completing a master’s degree in sculpture. I’ve been living in Bruges for a few years now, actively working in my studio daily.

Intrigued by everyday visual language my work explores the identity of ‘fast’ formal communication in contemporary and popular environments. We live in a world where everything is at our fingertips, one internet search away. At a very high speed, rapidly flashing images are being launched at us every second.

While attempting to appropriate the collective character of present visual language, including its lack of self-identity, the work often creates an even larger distance to reality.

Breaking down the vast amount of images as an archaeologist would dig a site, I’m isolating and cataloging each piece I find relevant. The objects originate from either food industry advertising such as billboards or packaging, toy design but also art history and its iconography. Similar to present visual images, styles, cultures and symbolism mix and blend together. In a sense, I wonder if there is room for new visual language, or if all images have become collective property.

The objects are taken out of context and evolve to sculptures that are constantlyshifting in between figurative imagery and abstraction. Their often bright and playful colors bring a certain softness and naivety with them, looking closely they hold a different type of subject under the surface.
