Bertrand Fournier

Bertrand Fournier (1985, France) began painting in his early 30s and he is entirely self-taught; his hobby soon became an obsession which led to public recognition through Instagram.

Bertrand Fournier views painting as a task of translation, finding ways to transform data into a canvas. At the rate of 12 hours a day in the studio, Bertrand Fournier creates in a sense of urgency.

When Fournier started posting his images on Instagram three years ago, he was quickly spotted by gallerists around the world: Germany, London, New York, Australia, Belgium, France.

“My work goes a little in all directions, that's why I work in series. It allows me not to lock myself in a technique, a palette - I prefer to keep a certain freedom. Each series takes me to another. However now the fact of preparing solo shows makes me work differently because if these series are the basis of my work, I detach myself to prepare my shows, to give them a proper meaning. I mainly use oil because I like its appearance and the fact that it keeps the imprint of the brush intact.

An art critic has qualified my work as “suggestive abstract”, I like it very much because there is often a direct symbolism in my paintings. At first glance, they could appear to be a pure and hard abstract work. However, once people discover the title of my paintings they realize that they are actually facing a figurative work.” — Bertrand Fournier
