Statement
b. 1996 Antwerp, Xander Faes' work originates from a deep fascination with storytelling: film, scenery, comics as well as visual fantasy and science fiction. Although Faes graduated as sculptor, at the moment Faes mostly make graphite drawings that portray figurative scenes filled with theatrical storytelling elements and tropes. Basing his work on photographic material, Faes gradually builds up a drawing and lets it define and redefine itself along the creative process. Faes chooses to work with graphite for the same reasons he works with clay, stone and wood: because they are ancient materials with stories of their own to tell.
