With the “To be ajar cabinet” we investigate further into the meaning of woodcarving and the organic qualities of wood. For the boards that are used in the cabinet we hand drew a pattern on a piece of paper with a pencil, we then scanned it and translated the 2D drawn lines into a 3D height map which we digitally applied to the boards to give them the natural structure. On top of the drawing we put a drawing of an ornament which makes it look like an ornament has been carved into the wood planks. After the planks were printed we stained them with wood stain and then sanded of the woodstain from the top layers to highlight the structure. We think this way of manipulating wood is interesting because you can control the woodgrain yourself and you also have full control over the shape of the plank which allows you to construct complex structures that would have been hard to achieve with traditional wood working techniques; for instance the bulges from which the wooden dowels stick out to hold the front planks of the doors.
