"The torches were made for my show with Cathrin Hoffmann 'Somewhere in Between' which looked into the idea of 'dyad' and things consisting of 2 elements e.g push and pull, give and take etc and then I started to think about communication between 2 people and how communicating is an example of giving and taking. For me, there's a lot of sentimentality and nostalgia based around these torches from when I was young when me and my next-door neighbour used to shine them to each other in the middle of the night and talk over walkie talkies when we should have been asleep. From a first glance, the torches seem to just be a cast but the end of the torches are coated in a phosphorous pigment which means that in the day, the pigment sucks in day light and then at night time (in almost total darkness) they gently glow and release the light that they took in during the day. This for me again talks about this idea of dyad and something consisting of 2 parts- it exists as a replica of a torch but also has function to it." - Liam Fallon 2020
