The origins to this painting are to be found in earlier work which featured the artist himself as well as the people around him, as if his practice were to be some type of documentation.
This painting features a high school friend who’s moved away four years ago.
A strong relationship was built beforehand so they have stayed in touch in order for her to, eventually, make an appearance in his work as time, without each other, went by. The image not only portrays a physical distance between both but also an emotional one. Taking inspiration from the diner restaurant and a picture of the artist’s friend drinking a milkshake, the reference to the 2003 Kelis song was easy to make and especially fitting to describe the relationship.
