Colleen Barry: Art Brussels 2023 –– Everyday Gallery Main Booth 6B-18

  • Colleen Barry’s paintings (1981, USA) combine the rigor and sophistication of European Masters with the potency of Contemporary Art. Colleen draws her inspiration from the humanist sculptures of Michelangelo, the painting collaborations of Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol, from the etchings of german draftswoman Käthe Kollwitz and the oil paintings of Neo Rauch. Her subjects include family members, self-portraits with her two children and mythic-like human and animal symbols. A lifetime New Yorker, Colleen grew up immersed in the music scene of the early 2000s, touring globally with the Strokes. At 21 she created paintings for film companies in New York and Hollywood; her work appeared in major motion pictures and music videos by the likes of Lil Kim and the Die Romantik. In 2011 she received an Affiliate Fellowship to reside at the American Academy in Rome with her husband, Will St. John. Colleen has been the recipient of numerous grants and awards and her work is in important collections in North America and Europe including the New Salem Museum of Art.

  • "Female bodies intersect with canine archetypes in protective stances, instinctual hunting movements, and, as in Thunder-Dome Study, introspective solitude. Drawn by a desire to regain my own innate 'wildness' I chose the African painted dog as my inspiration. Typical ofmy usual compositional preferences, these picturesoffer us clusters of figures bonded together in a rather cramped canvas. These are monumental representations of women and dogs, meant to remind us of our primal, and often over looked instinctual natures."
