Michiel Ceulers' (b. 1986, BE) practice is characterized by a gestural yet figurative style, deconstructing and decontextualizing both symbols and text in order to recombine them on his canvasses. Ceulers' wide range of color arangements results in striking works with often vaguely familiar fragments of text and motif. The viewer is encouraged to interpret these fragments, leading to a dialogue between the work and its spectator. The dynamic use of materials further contributes to this; Ceulers' uses a diverse range of materials, often sourcing cheap materials from the streets. On the surface, his work is suggestive of a more classical painterly tradition, but upon close inspection, the work reveals itself as challenging this notion through its materiality and technique. Through a diverse range of references, Ceulers' work also remains critically engaged with contemporary culture, underscored by how he titles the paintings. By combining cartoon-like symbols with literary references, he produces a certain cultural depth which is unique to his practice.
